Twelve students of Mangalore University, in Karnataka’s Manguluru, on Saturday, May 28, were allegedly prevented from entering their classrooms for wearing hijabs.

The principal, Anasuya Rai, tried to convince the girls to remove their hijabs inside the ladies’ room and then enter the classrooms, but the students insisted on keeping the hijabs on. The children then went to the library.

However, they were denied entry there as well and they had to return home. On Friday, the college development committee decided not to allow students to wear hijabs inside the classes or the library.

“Students can wear the hijab and come on the campus but they will have to remove the headscarf before entering classrooms or the library,” said vice-chancellor Subramanya Yadapadithaya.

The controversy over the hijab in Karnataka began on January 1, 2022, when six Muslim students of Udupi Women’s Pre-University college tried to attend classes wearing hijab. They were denied entry to college for wearing hijabs.

Since then, multiple incidents have taken place all over Karnataka where Muslim girls have come to classes wearing hijabs and Hindu students began wearing saffron shawls as a sign of protest.
